Q&A: Emuna versus bitahon

Q. What is the difference between emuna in HaShem and bitahon in HaShem?

[Answered by Rav S. Yosef Weizan, https://www.yeshiva.org.il/ask/]

A. Emuna in HaShem is the conscious awareness of the certainty of the presence of the Holy One blessed be He. Emuna contains within it a thirsting to be connected to HaShem as much as possible throughout the day. One who has bitahon in HaShem observes HaShem’s providence over him. It is an awareness that everything that happens to us is accompanied by a special personal supervision. Bitahon is the awareness that we are watched over and that everything that happens to us is for our good. Emuna moves from the bottom up. Bitahon moves from the top down.
